Who we are

The College of Mental Health Nursing trains Registered Nurses to become specialist psychiatric nurses. It belongs to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Calabar, which has cared for people with mental illness since 1903 and is the oldest mental health institution in Nigeria.

Students spend the programme inside a working specialist hospital. They learn in the classroom and then apply what they learn in the wards, the out-patient clinics, the emergency unit and the community services of the hospital, under the supervision of experienced nurses and clinicians.

Vision

To be a leading centre for the training of psychiatric and mental health nurses in West and Central Africa.

Mission

To produce competent, ethical and caring psychiatric nurses through sound teaching, supervised clinical practice and research, in line with the standards of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

Core values

Compassion, respect for the dignity of every patient, confidentiality, professional integrity and lifelong learning.

Our objectives

  • Train Registered Nurses to assess, plan, give and evaluate nursing care for people with mental, neurological and substance use disorders.
  • Prepare nurses to work with families and communities in the prevention of mental illness and the rehabilitation of patients.
  • Develop the management and leadership skills needed to run psychiatric wards and units.
  • Build a habit of research and evidence-based practice in psychiatric nursing.
